Overview
Suonenjoen lukio (Suonenjoki Upper Secondary School) is a small school of 74 students and 13 teachers providing its students a high-quality, inspiring learning environment. It is situated in Suonenjoki (a town of 7000 inhabitants), Eastern Finland, approximately 330 km from Helsinki. Suonenjoki is well-connected to the rest of Finland: Kuopio, with its 122,000 inhabitants, is 50 km away. Jyväskylä, with its 145,000 inhabitants, is 100 km away. Both are large cities on a Finnish scale, but easy and inexpensive to reach thanks to an efficient railway system.
"Growing up for life" is the leading guideline of our school. Consequently, the school encourages its students to find and cultivate their personal strengths and is committed to giving them all the necessary knowledge and skills for lifelong learning and self-development. The values most cherished at our school are co-operation, tolerance, sustainable development and cultural identity. These values guide all the activities, teaching in particular, but also educational visits, cultural events and different projects such as the Erasmus+ projects and the Nordplus project that we are currently involved in. Our upper secondary school is hence strongly oriented towards internationalization. To be more exact, we are an Erasmus accredited school, and in the last ten years every student has been offered a possibility to at least one EU-funded Erasmus+ mobility to another European partner country.
Our school is famous for its warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Obviously, this would not be possible without a dedicated student body and peer tutors active in making their fellow students feel at home also at school. The student union plans and organizes extra-curricular activities that will keep you entertained for example during breaks. You can always get extra support from a school nurse, curator or special needs teacher as well. Our teachers are easily approachable and the well-being of our students is everything to us. You will be assigned your own Tutor Teacher who will help you not only with your studies but also with any practical problems you might encounter in your spare time. We offer language training in form of courses of Finnish as a second language as well.
Suonenjoen lukio works in close co-operation with other schools in the area, which makes it possible for our students to choose from a wide spectrum of courses on the Web. In addition, the school is equipped with a modern virtual teaching classroom where students can participate in online courses given by other upper secondary schools in the area. Our school co-operates with many universities and the students are able to opt for university level courses already during their studies at upper secondary school.
A new sports hall including a gym and a swimming hall has just been opened in connection with our school center. These services are free of charge for upper secondary students.
Our upper secondary school also offers a sports coaching line where you can specialize in the sport of your choice. Some Finnish championship-level athletes have graduated from the line.
