Petäjävesi High School
Overview
Petäjäveden lukio (Petäjävesi Upper Secondary School) is a small school of with only 64 students, and 21 university educated and motivated teachers. We provide an inspiring, caring, and high-quality learning environment.
Our school is situated in Petäjävesi, a scenic, peaceful, and safe municipality of 4 000 inhabitants in Central Finland. In Petäjävesi, you will find all the basic services needed for good living: grocery stores, a pharmacy, a healthcare centre with a dental clinic, and excellent sports facilities including a well-equipped gym.
Petäjävesi has good train and bus connections to Jyväskylä (35 km), the vibrant and energetic capital of Central Finland with nearly 145 000 inhabitants. Jyväskylä is famous for its university, which is one of the largest and most popular multidisciplinary universities in Finland (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtPoGYK4-bY). The city has a large number of students from all over Finland and abroad, as well as numerous events, activities and a lively student life. In addition, this bustling city offers great opportunities for shopping and various sports activities both in winter and summer time. Jyväskylä also has frequent railway connections to Helsinki, the capital of Finland (300 km).
Petäjävesi Upper Secondary School has performed above average in statistics showing the learning outcomes of upper secondary schools in Central Finland. Due to the small size of our school, we can offer our students support to help them achieve their individual learning goals.

International citizenship. As an Erasmus+ accredited organization, our school, and our students, have access to European Union funded mobility, for instance, a one-week student exchange with our current partner school in Germany.
Entrepreneurship is an important path to employment and building your future according to your professional goals. This is accomplished, for instance, by organizing excursions, hosting visitors, and learning from entrepreneurs with different professional paths.
Cultural activities, such as visits to art exhibitions, concerts, or theatre plays create shared experiences, thus enhancing quality of life, and fostering your overall well-being. Our school provides our students with opportunities, for example, to participate in a biannual theatre production!
The small Petäjävesi Upper Secondary School offers a cosy, friendly and caring atmosphere where students from different backgrounds have the opportunity to identify and reflect on the values and principles of a good life. We know each other by name, and nobody will be left alone. In your studies you are always supported by a school nurse, school social worker, or special education teacher. We also support your language training in the form of courses in Finnish as a second language.
This atmosphere would not be possible without an active and supportive student body and peer tutors, who will make you feel at home. The student body organizes, for instance, extra-curricular activities during breaks. The students have designed their own space where they can relax, chat, and have a cup of coffee during the breaks between lessons.
Last but not least: a free, delicious school lunch is offered every day, and a free access to the gym at our school will help make you constantly feel energetic and efficient.
Living expenses:
A special feature of the Finnish educational system is that it is free of charge. This means that teaching and instruction is free, including learning materials such as textbooks, notebooks, and a laptop computer. Each school day, a healthy and nutritious free breakfast and lunch are provided at the school.
Our municipality will help you find a rental apartment. The cost of a rental apartment in the centre of Petäjävesi (e.g., a single-room studio approximately 300 meters from our school) starts at around 150 € per month including furniture, electricity, and water. It is also possible to rent a shared apartment with fellow students. Be prepared to pay one month’s rent as a rent security deposit.
The cost of a mobile phone with unlimited data is about 30–50 € per month. You will also need at least 250 € per month for food expenses. In addition, it is good to have 50-100 € to spend on leisure activities of your choice.
